Spanish Language Origins
By Chris Kennelly of http://www.fastlearnspanish.com
Spanish, also know as Castilian, as a language spread throughout the New World, between the 15th and 19th centuries, when the explorers were discovering new territories and strongholds in the Americas. Spanish developed form what is termed Late or Vulgar Latin, this was termed as the speech of ordinary people, or what in modern day is known as the working class. It is so widely spoken as a native language that it is said to be the second most spoken native language in the world, this is after Mandarin Chinese. The language is spoken in over 21 countries, classified as Spanish speaking countries, as well as four other countries where a large percentage of the population speak Spanish. Although with such a wide distribution of the language, the difference between Continental (European) and South American Spanish is quite a marked one. So much so that the language has been divided into five distinct variants; these have been divided into Caribbean, South American Pacific, Central American, Argentine-Uruguayan-Paraguayan and Highland Latin American Spanish variants.
